Mold thrives in warm, humid spaces and is generally considered a seasonal problem. However, mold doesn’t just disappear during the winter season, which can affect indoor air quality and cause health problems for you and your family. In today’s post, local HVAC company Air Quality Heating and Air Conditioning discusses how to prevent mold problems in the winter.
Mold Grows Even When It’s Cold
It’s important to remember that mold can grow in any space that has enough moisture, an adequate food source and is in the right temperature range. Certain types of mold spores become dormant when it’s cold, while others thrive in lower temperature ranges. This means the latter can grow in unheated spaces in houses, including attics, walls and unfinished basements.
How to Prevent Mold Growth
Fortunately, there are a few things that you can do to help prevent mold growth.
Replace your air filters. The air filters in your heat pump and air conditioner trap indoor air pollutants — including mold spores — and prevent them from spreading throughout your home. A typical HVAC air filter becomes full after three months of use. Regularly inspect the air filters and replace them as needed.
Monitor indoor humidity levels. You can control relative indoor humidity by running a humidifier/dehumidifier system with your HVAC system and using a hygrometer to check indoor humidity levels. A tell-tale sign of high indoor humidity is condensation on the windows.
Address attic ventilation issues. Poor attic ventilation can result in trapped heat and humidity that promotes mold growth and recirculates the spores in your living spaces. Ventilation issues can be addressed by installing additional vents or exhaust fans on the roof.
Regularly inspect the kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen and bathroom are the two most humid places in your home, and are where mold will most likely grow. Regularly inspect underneath the sinks and fix any leaks promptly. If you do find mold, you can remove it using diluted bleach or vinegar.
