Most HVAC systems have an indoor and outdoor unit. While the former is safely tucked inside your home, the latter doesn’t get the same protection. After all, it’s exposed to the elements as well as the eyes of your neighbors. Properly maintaining it can ensure its longevity and promote more comfortable indoor temperatures for you and your family year-round. Today, Air Quality Heating & Air Conditioning offers the following tips to protect your outdoor HVAC unit from damage:
Keep the Outdoor Unit Free of Debris
Outdoor HVAC units are at risk of breaking down due to dust, leaves and other obstructions. When any of these are present, airflow through the condenser is reduced, which affects the entire HVAC system’s performance and longevity. Keep the outdoor unit debris-free—trim leaves, branches and weeds on shrubs, trees and the lawn around the area.
Make Sure the Outdoor Unit Has Adequate Space
Leaving adequate space around the outdoor unit is important for several reasons. For one, it allows a certified HVAC technician to easily access the area during a scheduled AC or furnace repair. Another is that doing so gives the unit space to breathe. Make sure it’s at least two feet away from your home or garden plants and at least five feet away from overhanging branches.
Check Your Gutters
Overflowing gutters caused by clogs doesn’t just cause water damage to the exterior components of your home: they can affect your outdoor HVAC unit as well. Keep gutters well-maintained by removing any leaves, twigs, debris and other organic matter that may have collected inside the gutters. Alternatively, invest in a gutter protection system to ensure rainwater run-off coming from your downspouts is directed away from the house, which will help keep the outdoor unit safe and dry.
