Are Ductless Air Conditioners More Difficult to Repair?

Homeowners new to having ductless air conditioners are often concerned about their repair requirements (and associated costs) compared to typical ducted air conditioning systems. In today’s post, local heating and air conditioning contractor Air Quality Heating & Air Conditioning shares a closer look at ductless air conditioners and their repair requirements.

How Ductless Air Conditioners Differ from Ducted Systems

Ductless and ducted air conditioning systems operate in a very similar way. They consist of two units: an outdoor unit that houses the condenser and compressor and an indoor unit that houses the evaporator and air handler. The main difference between the two is that a ductless system releases cool air into the room through the indoor unit, as opposed to being attached to a series of air ducts.

A ductless air conditioner is designed to cool a relatively smaller space. An average-sized home that’s cooled by a ducted air conditioning system will require multiple ductless units, typically one per room, providing cooled air as needed. Instead of a single thermostat controlling the overall temperature of the house, each room can have its own thermostat, allowing everyone in the household to set their own custom room temperatures. Also, the lack of ductwork helps keep maintenance costs low, as there are no air ducts to clean and maintain.

Ductless Air Conditioner Repair Needs

There are certain problems that are unique to ductless air conditioners. For example, while all types of air conditioners have air handlers, ductless air conditioners have one in every room, and there are systems that allow multiple air handlers to be connected to a single outdoor unit. This means when one air handler breaks down, the other rooms in the house won’t be affected. If the outdoor unit requires repair, then only the rooms that utilize that particular unit are going to be affected.

So to answer the question “Are ductless air conditioners difficult to repair?”: no, they’re not. The problems described above don’t make repairs more difficult, just different. What this means for you, as the homeowner, is that you have to make sure you’re working with an HVAC technician who understands ductless systems and their unique needs.
